While DID is a recognized psychological disorder, it remains one of psychiatry's most debated and controversial diagnoses. Professionals may have varying opinions on its etiology, prevalence, and treatment.

Psychotherapy focuses on stabilizing the patient, ensuring safety, and building a strong therapeutic alliance. Successful treatment of DID often requires a combination of these therapies tailored to an individual's unique needs. The overarching goal is to improve the individual's quality of life, achieve integration or harmonious functioning of identity states, and process and cope with past traumas.

Implications if Untreated
